The Bank has total assets of Tk. 345 233 920 000 as at December 31, 2010. Immediately after the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971, were the former United Bank Limited and Union Bank Limited renamed Janata Bank. On 15 November 2007 the bank was corporatised and renamed Janata Bank Limited.

It was established as a nationalized bank in 1972, pursuant to the Order of nationalization of Bangladesh Bank, the merger of the branches of Muslim Commercial Bank, Standard Bank, the Australia Bank and those in eastern Pakistan after the 1971 the liberation war of Bangladesh. The bank was denationalized in 1986 and was reorganized as a company, with the Government of Bangladesh, which has a 51% stake. However, after 2000, the government stripped of their actions, and the bank's privatization was complete.

History: Sonali Bank was established in 1972 under the Bangladesh Banks (Nationalisation) Order, through the merger and the nationalization of the branches of the National Bank of Pakistan, the Bank of Bhowalpur and Premier Bank branches located in East Pakistan until 1971 the Bangladesh Liberation War. In determining, Sonali Bank had a paid up capital of 30 million taka. In 2001, the authorized capital and paid were 10 billion and TK TK 3.272 billion, respectively. Today, the authorized capital and paid TK TK 10 billion and 9 billion, respectively, the Reserve Bank funds were Tk 60 million in 1979 and Tk 2.05 billion on June 30, 2000.
